Acne vulgaris can appear as tender red bumps, small white nodules, blackheads and deep, painful pus-filled cysts that can lead to scarring. Antibiotics are often prescribed for acne vulgaris as they suppress acne-related bacterial infections (known as propionibacterium acnes). Antibiotics can be ineffective, however, due to emerging antibiotic-resistant strains. Antibiotics also wipe out the good gut bacteria that are necessary for a healthy gastrointestinal tract, and negative side effects, such as candida albicans (a yeast infection), and future skin problems can result.
